Dental Crowns London

Strengthen and restore your teeth with top-rated crowns in London
Dental crowns are caps of restorative materials that cover the circumference of the tooth crown (the visible part of the tooth in the oral cavity) to restore or strengthen it.
A specific amount of tooth structure must be removed to create space for the crown to be properly seated. Failing to achieve adequate room for crown construction can result in bulging crowns, which are deemed failures in terms of aesthetics and hygiene.

When do I need a dental crown?

Dental crowns are indicated in the following situations:

  1. Restore the function and aesthetics of a badly broken-down tooth due to caries.
  2. Strengthen weakened teeth after root canal treatment.
  3. Restore function and aesthetics for fractured and cracked teeth.
  4. Strengthen teeth with a large restoration.
  5. Restore the aesthetics of a discoloured tooth when other conservative solutions fail.
  6. Restore the shape of teeth with anatomical malformations related to their shape or size, such as peg-shaped lateral incisors.
  7. They can be a part of other dental restorations, such as dental bridges, and can cover dental implants.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can be fabricated from several materials. The choice depends on your preferences and the condition of the tooth.

  1. Metal Crowns:
  • They are fabricated from metal alloys such as gold, cobalt-chromium, and nickel-chromium base metal alloys.
  • Metal crowns have very high wear resistance and rarely chip or break. They require a minimal amount of tooth reduction and can last a lifetime.
  • The only drawback is their metallic colour, so they are typically used on back teeth, such as molars.
  1. Porcelain fused to Metal Crowns:
  • They are fabricated from a base metallic layer covered by a porcelain layer that matches your tooth colour.
  • They can be used on both front and back teeth or when there is a greater need for strengthening teeth and improving aesthetics.
  • They may cause wear on the natural dentition, the porcelain layer may chip or break, and the metal layer may exhibit a thin dark line at the margins.
  1. All-porcelain (ceramic) crowns:
  • Dental crowns are fabricated from porcelain or ceramic material exclusively.
  • The ceramic crown may be milled as one piece from a ceramic block that matches your tooth colour using a CAD/CAM machine or by pressing an inner ceramic core to form a framework similar to metal, then porcelain layers are added.
  • They provide superior aesthetics and a natural-looking appearance compared to all other types of crowns, as they mimic the natural translucency of a tooth.
  • It can be used on the front and back teeth.
  1. Acrylic and Stainless-steel Crowns
  • Both acrylic and stainless-steel crowns are weak in terms of wear resistance, making them prone to pitting or fracturing easily.
  • They can only be used as temporary crowns to protect the reduced tooth from sensitivity and fracture until the permanent crown is ready.
  • Stainless steel crowns can also be used for children to protect weakened teeth and keep them in place until they shed.

World-class dental crowns at Dental Care Centre: Fabrication process

Need a dental crown? We’ve got your back. Dental Care Centre is London’s top clinic, offering high-quality dental crowns with superior function and aesthetics to meet your needs.
Dental crown fabrication requires two dental visits and takes around 2-3 weeks for delivery.

The First Visit: Examination and Tooth Preparation

Our prosthodontic experts will thoroughly examine the tooth designated for a dental crown. The existing restoration will be checked to ensure it fits properly with no open margins, and they will also ensure there are no active carious lesions.
In the case of root canal-treated teeth, an X-ray is performed to assess the root filling adequacy and to confirm the absence of any periapical infections.
If everything checks out, our experts will choose the most suitable crown material based on your needs, expectations, and tooth condition.
The initial step for crown fabrication is tooth preparation. If the tooth is still vital, local anesthesia will be administered to numb the tooth, and then the tooth structure is removed to create room for the dental crown.
After preparation, an impression will be made using a putty material or a digital camera. The impression will then be sent to the lab to customise your crown, with the chosen porcelain shade if all ceramic or porcelain fused to metal crowns will be fabricated.
As a final step, a temporary acrylic or stainless-steel crown is cemented to the prepared tooth until the final restoration is fabricated. A temporary crown is essential to prevent tooth sensitivity after reduction if your tooth is vital and to support your aesthetic and functional needs during your waiting period. Temporary crowns are weak and can be easily dislodged. Carefully brush and floss around the temporary restoration and avoid sticky foods. If the temporary crown is dislodged, contact your dentist immediately.

The Second Visit: Crown Cementation

The second visit is scheduled after the dental labs finish your permanent restoration. The temporary crown will be removed, and the tooth will be cleaned of any residual temporary cement.
The permanent crown is placed and checked for marginal fit, bite, and shade. If all aspects are satisfactory, a durable cement will be applied to secure your new crown.

Caring for your dental crown

Restoration with a dental crown does not guarantee immunity to dental caries. The margins of the dental crown are vulnerable to dental caries if proper oral hygiene is neglected.
Brush and floss your teeth regularly twice a day. Using antibacterial mouthwash may be beneficial in preventing plaque buildup at the crown margins. Avoid hard and sticky foods to prevent crown fractures or dislodgment.
If you are a bruxer, discuss with your dentist the need for a nightguard to protect your teeth and crowns.
Keep up with regular hygiene and check-up visits to maintain your oral health and prolong the lifespan of your dental crown.

FAQs

A dental crown is essential for strengthening weakened teeth due to extensive restoration, caries, or following a root canal treatment.

Dental crowns are not painful. During tooth preparation, local anesthesia is administered for your comfort. You may experience tooth sensitivity for a few days after crown placement. If this sensitivity does not subside, contact your dentist immediately.

According to your needs and tooth condition, dental crowns may be made of metal, porcelain fused to metal, or ceramic. All ceramic crowns offer the best aesthetic results.

Dental crowns typically require only two visits for fitting. If the crown is made using CAD/CAM technology, it can be delivered on the same day.

It is better to wait for 24 hours before eating with your new crown, allowing the cement to harden.

Dental crowns do not require special instructions. Brush and floss your teeth twice daily and use an antibacterial mouthwash to prevent plaque accumulation around the crown margin.

A dislodged or loose crown, bad breath, a bad taste, fractured or chipped porcelain, or sharp edges that hurt your tongue or cheek require an emergency visit to your dentist.

With proper care and maintenance, your dental crowns may last a lifetime.

Dental crowns cost start from €450, depending on the crown material.

Depending on your needs and tooth condition, more conservative approaches may be used, such as veneers to correct teeth discoloration and inlays/onlays to restore teeth affected by extensive caries. If dental crowns fail, the only alternative is tooth extraction and restoration using dental implants or bridges.

I would really recommend this Dental Practice. Dr Kolar is a very attentive dentist who cares about the you as a person as well as about the health of your teeth and gums. He takes time to explain the processes he is leading you through, explains how your dental health has progressed over time and encourages you to take care of your teeth. For the first time in my life I look forward to coming to the dentist!

Toby R.

I have been registered at this dental practice now, for just over 15 years. Throughout that whole period, I have been lucky enough to have been looked after by the wonderful, and patient, Dr Prasad. He has covered many procedures in my mouth, from extraction, and root canal, right up to the most recent procedure, Composite bonding of my broken two front teeth. Do not hesitate to register at this practise, as you will be looked after with care and consideration.

Thank you Dr Prasao

Very friendly

During the lockdown period I was able to see Dr Irfan for a dental emergency I had. I’m so grateful that they have been available throughout this. Gillian the practice manager contacted me and offered me an appointment the same day. I am a long standing patient at this practice and cannot thank them enough for great service they have provided to me throughout the years. Great dentist, staff and management. Thank you all so much.

Susan L.

The Dental Care Center has been an excellent dentist surgery that I have been attending as a patient for many years. When I was young I didn’t have a pleasant experience with my local dentist on more than one occasion. I found the dentist at new cross dental care center very reassuring and comforting. The management and reception were also very welcoming.

Stewart S.

Really efficient service and friendly helpful staff, clean and fresh environment

Stephanie P.

Great desk staff and Dentists. Excellent with young children.

Spencer M.

Brilliant service from Dr Mansi Patel – she ensured I was well informed regarding my dental issues and spent a whole consultation discussing my dental history and reviewing my previous scans. She provided the means to communicate out of hours, if I had any further queries. She demonstrated empathy and encouraged collaborative decision making throughout. This is a refreshing approach, speaking from someone who’s a healthcare professional. Would recommend!

Sonia M.

I had a wonderful experience at Dental Care Centre. Dr Mani Nasir is fantastic, he listened to me, had my best interests at heart and delivered excellent and professional care. Dr Mani & his nurse Kawtar are an amazing team! I also felt very safe with the measures the practice has put in place in light of covid-19. Thank you!
