Bone Grafting

Bone Grafting – Bone Management
Joint and bone grafting is a surgical procedure used to fix joint and bone disorders. The procedure is useful for repairing damaged bone caused by trauma or joint issues and enhancing the stability of devices that have been installed, such as in total knee replacement and dental implants.
Implant therapy is only effectual when the bone structure in the jaw is strong enough. Initially, people with insufficient jawbone weren’t suitable candidates for implant therapy.
Now, however, modern dentistry has made great advances in restoring bone without sufficient dental tissue through bone grafting. Dental bone grafting essentially refers to augmenting bone in the jaw or the gum surrounding teeth.
Bone grafting treatment is performed to reverse bone loss. There are several causes that lead to loss or destruction of the jawbone, including periodontal disease, trauma, or even removable dentures that do not fit.
A bone graft can also be inserted to enhance the jawbone to make the installation of an implant post easier than it might be without this additional support. If an individual loses a natural tooth by surgical extraction or injury, the jawbone diminishes. To prevent this from occurring, a bone grafting process is used.
Several types of bone graft are available, such as:
- Autogenous bone graft – The grafting bone is taken from a patient’s body, like the wrist, pelvis, ribs or the hips.
- Xenograft – Usually taken from cows, sanitised and stored in a tissue bank.
- Allograft – These are artificial or synthetic bones. They can also be cadaver bone sourced from bone banks.
Autogenous bone grafts are considered as the gold standard because they have the most predictable outcome of treatment although it may not be possible to manually source the graft from a patient’s own body. Unlike autologous grafts, allografts and xenografts, which don’t require a second site for surgery and may be donated in greater quantity, autografts are the only graft that requires a second surgical site.
