Types of braces

Orthodontics has come a long way since the days when wearing braces meant having a mouth full of metal. Now, there are many different braces to choose from that are smaller, easier to wear and more effective than ever before.

Invisible braces

Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligners to move your teeth into position. The aligners look like thin sports mouthguards and sit over your teeth. They’re removable and practically invisible to other people.

Traditional fixed metal braces

Traditional fixed metal braces use a combination of metal brackets, archwires and ligatures (elastic bands) to straighten teeth. They’re the ‘original’ braces. However, modern developments in technology allow the brackets to be much smaller, less bulky and more comfortable to wear.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are much like traditional fixed metal braces, the difference being the brackets are made from ceramic material and are the same colour as your teeth, making them less visible. Ceramic brackets are smoother and stronger than those used for traditional braces.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces use brackets that have a sliding mechanism, which allows for the archwire to move in response to your teeth. This means they operate with less friction and there is no need for the elastic bands used with traditional braces. The most popular is the Damon system of self-ligating braces.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are attached to the back surface of your teeth. Aside from the aesthetic benefits, one of the advantages of lingual braces is that there is less risk of decalcification. Orthodontics – What is it?

Orthodontics is a department of dentistry that specializes specifically in correcting teeth and jaw irregularities, improving function and aesthetics. This usually entails fitting an orthodontic appliance to ensure teeth alignment.

Is there a difference between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?

Orthodontists are dentists who did two to three years of postgraduate study focussing on orthodontics. We are lucky to have Dr Xavi who is a clinical lecturer at a world-class institution, Kings College London, and Dr Arman who is one of the top service providers in invisible braces by Invisalign.

What is the cost of Orthodontic treatment?

This is primarily dependent on what type of treatment you get. Some patients will need extra treatment. With our payment options, including monthly payments, we help every patient access the best orthodontic treatment possible.

How long will Orthodontic treatment take?

The time depends on the sort of treatment you need. The short answer is between 4 and 24 months.

How often will I need to visit?

You will need to see your orthodontist or dentist every 6 to 8 weeks for adjustments once your brace has been fitted.

Will I need to have teeth removed?

All modern braces allow most treatments without removing teeth, but there are circumstances in which removing a tooth or teeth can give a better result.

Does the treatment hurt?

Orthodontic treatment is not painful, but you may experience discomfort at various times during your treatment. This is typically the time that you have your braces tightened or you get your next set of aligners. This discomfort can be relieved by over-the-counter pain medications, such as paracetamol.

Is this type of treatment beneficial to children?

Yes. It’s best that you obtain your child’s orthodontic assessment as soon as possible, ideally before his or her seventh birthday. According to UK guidelines, this is the optimal time to have a child’s orthodontic exam.

In most cases, it allows the child and parents, along with the orthodontist, to prepare for treatment if necessary. In rare cases, this may result in the child receiving treatment initially to prevent future orthodontic issues.

As a teenager, do I have to wear braces?

Not necessarily. One of the effective treatments are traditional metal braces, also known as train tracks. However, as orthodontic technology has grown, there are more options for adolescents and younger children. This includes Invisalign Teen.

I am receiving treatment; do I still have to visit my dentist?

Yes, it is in your best interest to see your dentist regularly while you’re receiving orthodontic treatment. This will ensure that your teeth and gums remain clean and healthy during therapy.

Can I clean my teeth while wearing braces?

Yes, and it is very important you do so. If your teeth are not properly taken care of, this may affect your treatment. Read our section on maintaining teeth to learn more about teeth, braces, and cleaning.

I want Orthodontic Treatment, but I am an adult and too embarrassed to wear braces. Do I have any other options?

Many of our orthodontists offer treatment to more adult patients nowadays than children and teenagers. Invisalign is among the most popular remedy options.
