Orthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with your teeth alignment. Any malocclusion problem, such as tilted teeth, overbite, and crossbite, should be addressed with a specialist orthodontist rather than a general dentist.

A specialist orthodontist has more experience and deep knowledge in moving teeth in a more favourable position without endangering their periodontal health.

The teeth are moved in specific directions using a calculated amount of force. If these forces exceed the required amount, this may lead to teeth loosening.

At the Dental Care Centre, we take pride in being one the leading orthodontic centres in London, providing exceptional care through our experienced orthodontists and the latest technologies.

Importance of Orthodontic Treatment

Most people consider orthodontic treatment as a cosmetic solution to enhance the design of their smiles. Orthodontic treatment entails many advantages other than cosmetic benefits. The importance of orthodontic treatment includes:

  • Enhancement of periodontal health: Malaligned teeth unevenly receive the masticatory forces, leading to bone resorption and gingival recession in response to the uneven force distribution. Correcting teeth alignment enhances the periodontal health of the teeth by positioning the teeth in a position to receive favourable forces.
  • Easier hygiene: Malaligned teeth may pose several difficulties during daily cleaning. It may be challenging to brush and floss malaligned teeth, which increases their chances of developing dental caries. Orthodontic treatment makes it easier to clean these teeth by correctly positioning them.
  • Speech correction: Malaligned teeth may cause a lisp or difficulty pronouncing some letters. By correcting teeth position, you may enhance your speech ability.
  • Better function: The masticatory function is improved when the teeth are well-aligned and correctly touch each other, allowing for better chewing and minimising GIT problems. Orthodontic problems can also affect the TMJ health and cause pain during normal function of the joint.
  • Aesthetics and smile correction: Orthodontic treatment is well known to correctly position the teeth for a breathtaking smile, enhancing self-esteem and confidence.

Cases Requiring Orthodontic Treatments Include:

  • Overbite: Normally, the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth. Overbite is when the overlap is more than it should be.
  • Crossbite: When the lower front teeth protrude beyond the upper front teeth.
  • Crowding or crooked teeth: This is a condition when insufficient space is available for teeth eruption, so the erupting teeth shift to an abnormal position.
  • Open bite: The upper and the lower teeth do not touch.
  • Overjet: The upper teeth protrude excessively as a result of bad habits such as thumb sucking.

The Ideal Age to Visit Our Orthodontist

The earlier the orthodontic intervention, the better the outcome. However, you can never be too old for an orthodontic treatment. Our orthodontic experts recommend a consultation visit at the age of 11-12 years old when most of the permanent teeth erupt to evaluate the jaw size and teeth alignment to avoid serious orthodontic problems. We treat patients from 9 to 99 years of age.

Orthodontic Solutions

Orthodontics has come a long way since the days when wearing braces meant having a mouth full of metal. Now, there are many different braces to choose from that are smaller, easier to wear and more effective than ever before.

Invisible braces

Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligners to move your teeth into position. The aligners look like thin sports mouthguards and sit over your teeth. They’re removable and practically invisible to other people.

Traditional fixed metal braces

Traditional fixed metal braces use a combination of metal brackets, archwires and ligatures (elastic bands) to straighten teeth. They’re the ‘original’ braces. However, modern developments in technology allow the brackets to be much smaller, less bulky and more comfortable to wear.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are much like traditional fixed metal braces, the difference being the brackets are made from ceramic material and are the same colour as your teeth, making them less visible. Ceramic brackets are smoother and stronger than those used for traditional braces.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces use brackets that have a sliding mechanism, which allows for the archwire to move in response to your teeth. This means they operate with less friction and there is no need for the elastic bands used with traditional braces. The most popular is the Damon system of self-ligating braces.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are attached to the back surface of your teeth. Aside from the aesthetic benefits, one of the advantages of lingual braces is that there is less risk of decalcification. This is because the inside surface of your teeth is more robust. A well-known brand of lingual braces is Incognito,

Care and Maintenance of Your Teeth during Orthodontic Treatment

If you have a removable orthodontic device, you can continue oral hygiene measures without interruptions.

However, if you use the fixed braces system, special instructions are followed to avoid dental caries. Regular brushing and flossing at least twice daily is recommended. The area below the orthodontic wires and around the brackets are good media for plaque accumulation, and their cleaning may be challenging. Our orthodontic experts may recommend interdental brushes or Water flossers for easy cleaning of inaccessible areas.

Maintaining regular check-up visits with our orthodontists and hygiene visits are essential to maintaining oral health during orthodontic treatment.

Relapse after Orthodontic Treatment

After the orthodontic treatment is completed, a retainer is required to avoid relapse and to maintain the teeth in their new positions. Retainers may be fixed to your teeth or removable devices that are advised to be worn for a specific number of hours daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is advised to seek orthodontic consultation at the age of 11-12 years old when most permanent teeth erupt. The earlier the intervention, the better the outcome.

You may experience minor discomfort at the beginning of orthodontic treatment that can last for a few days. This pain can be effectively managed through over-the-counter painkillers.

The duration of orthodontic treatment depends on the complexity of the condition and the amount of tooth movement required. During your consultation, our orthodontists will explain all the treatment aspects, including the treatment of choice, treatment duration, frequency of follow-ups, and the expected outcome.

Orthodontic treatment is a gradual process that involves applying gradual force over a long period to move teeth safely while avoiding serious complications such as root resorption and teeth loosening.

Our orthodontists will advise about the regular follow-up visits required for your case to monitor the progress, apply wire tightening, and prevent progressive diseases such as tooth decay.

Extraction is included in the orthodontic treatment plan in limited cases, such as unrestorable teeth, impacted teeth, or the absence of space for teeth movement.

Recent technologies in the field of orthodontics introduced Invisalign and ceramic braces for discreet teeth alignment. Invisalign is a set of clear aligners that is changed every two weeks.

Ceramic braces include tooth -coloured brackets and white wires.

Invisalign offers discreet and fast teeth alignment solutions compared to the braces system. However, complex orthodontic problems cannot be addressed using Invisalign.

It may be challenging to clean your teeth around braces. Our orthodontic professionals will instruct you on the most effective way to clean your teeth around orthodontic braces to maintain oral health. Water pick and interdental brushes may be beneficial to clean inaccessible areas.

Retainers are essential to maintain the teeth in their new position and avoid relapse. The type of retainer and the duration of using a retainer differ from one case to another. Our expert orthodontists will advise you about the most suitable solutions for your condition.

I would really recommend this Dental Practice. Dr Kolar is a very attentive dentist who cares about the you as a person as well as about the health of your teeth and gums. He takes time to explain the processes he is leading you through, explains how your dental health has progressed over time and encourages you to take care of your teeth. For the first time in my life I look forward to coming to the dentist!

Toby R.

I have been registered at this dental practice now, for just over 15 years. Throughout that whole period, I have been lucky enough to have been looked after by the wonderful, and patient, Dr Prasad. He has covered many procedures in my mouth, from extraction, and root canal, right up to the most recent procedure, Composite bonding of my broken two front teeth. Do not hesitate to register at this practise, as you will be looked after with care and consideration.

Thank you Dr Prasao

Very friendly

During the lockdown period I was able to see Dr Irfan for a dental emergency I had. I’m so grateful that they have been available throughout this. Gillian the practice manager contacted me and offered me an appointment the same day. I am a long standing patient at this practice and cannot thank them enough for great service they have provided to me throughout the years. Great dentist, staff and management. Thank you all so much.

Susan L.

The Dental Care Center has been an excellent dentist surgery that I have been attending as a patient for many years. When I was young I didn’t have a pleasant experience with my local dentist on more than one occasion. I found the dentist at new cross dental care center very reassuring and comforting. The management and reception were also very welcoming.

Stewart S.

Really efficient service and friendly helpful staff, clean and fresh environment

Stephanie P.

Great desk staff and Dentists. Excellent with young children.

Spencer M.

Brilliant service from Dr Mansi Patel – she ensured I was well informed regarding my dental issues and spent a whole consultation discussing my dental history and reviewing my previous scans. She provided the means to communicate out of hours, if I had any further queries. She demonstrated empathy and encouraged collaborative decision making throughout. This is a refreshing approach, speaking from someone who’s a healthcare professional. Would recommend!

Sonia M.

I had a wonderful experience at Dental Care Centre. Dr Mani Nasir is fantastic, he listened to me, had my best interests at heart and delivered excellent and professional care. Dr Mani & his nurse Kawtar are an amazing team! I also felt very safe with the measures the practice has put in place in light of covid-19. Thank you!
